Fairfield Porter – Sold for $267,200
In a direct reaction to the Abstract Expressionist movement in American painting, many artists made a choice to return to representational work. Fairfield Porter (1907-1975), along with others such as Philip Guston, Grace Hartigan and Elaine DeKooning painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits. One such work is Porter’s Wild Roses from 1961, which soared over its estimate of $100,000-150,000 to achieve $267,200. Through flattening of forms and broad expressive brushstrokes, Porter used the vehicle of modernist painting styles to drive the public’s attention back towards representational art.

Other Noteworthy Results
The sale also saw strong results for works by Natalia Goncharova, John Atkinson Grimshaw, Philip Leslie Hale, George Hitchcock, Jane Peterson, Dorothea Sharp, Eugen von Blaas and Vu Cao Dam, among many others.
