Ibram Lassaw Gold-Plated Bronze Abstract Pendant with Torque Necklace

Egyptian-born American artist Ibram Lassaw was an early to mid-century pioneer of abstract sculpture. Born to Russian parents in 1913, Lassaw's family immigrated to Brooklyn in 1921. He learned classic sculpture techniques of modeling and casting white taking a clay class at the Brooklyn Children's Museum under Dorothea Denslow. He went on to study classical reproductions and architectural sculpture at New York's Beaux Arts Institute of Design. Lassaw learned welding techniques while serving in the U.S. Army. His art and design was influenced by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Julio Gonzàlez, the Russian Constructivists, among others, as well as his passions and studies of biology, cosmology and Zen Buddhism. He was a founder of the American Abstract Artists and The Club, also called the Artists Club. His first solo show debuted at Kootz Gallery in New York City in 1951. Lassaw estimates he created between one to two thousand pendants (bosom sculptures) between 1951 and the late 1990s. He e exhibited widely until his passing in East Hampton, NY in December of 2003. In 2023, the Figge Museum in Davenport, Iowa hosted an exhibition of Lassaw's works and produced a catalog of his works titled "Quanta of Space: The Bosom Sculptures of Ibram Lassaw".
