Estate / Collection: The Property of a New England Family

[MANUSCRIPT--SHIP'S LOG]
[COPP, JAMES S.] Sea Journal. Journal of a Voyage...
The preprinted logbook issued Salem: James R. Buffum, [circa 1821]. Preprinted logbook completed in manuscript, covering two voyages. The first from New York to Havana and thence to Elsinore, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg and back to Boston, on the Ship Nile, April 1-November 14 1831; and from Salem to India and back to Salem, on the Ship Sumatra, November 27, 1831 to November 1, 1832. Contemporary brown sheep spine and corners with marbled paper boards, probably as issued. 12 1/4 x 7 3/4 (31 x 19.5 cm); with approximately 80 completed leaves with details of courses, speed in knots by the hour, positions, winds etc. etc. Some wear.

James Copp's first voyage recorded here was taken under Captain William Brown of Salem; the second under Captain Charles Roundy, also of Salem, who regularly (and apparently very profitably) sailed the Sumatra, a 287-ton vessel, to India and back (see Essex Institute Historical Collections, volume 58).
