Highlighting the sale was Aube a l'antipode, a deluxe portfolio by René Magritte (1898-1967) that surpassed its estimate, realizing $48,000. The 1966 portfolio featured seven signed etchings by the famed Surrealist.

An eerie Surrealist Landscape from 1960 by Dominican-born artist Jorge Noceda Sanchez (1931-1987) attracted strong competition that drove the bidding to $15,360, many times its estimate of $800-1,200.

Surrealism

Emerging in the early 20th century, Surrealism sought to unlock the creative potential of the unconscious mind. Artists like Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst and others pushed boundaries with thought-provoking works that depict dreamlike scenes and enigmatic imagery, challenging our notions of reality.

The sale featured a group of Surrealist works by such artists as Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, René Magritte, Roberto Matta, Joan Miró and Man Ray. Also represented are Jean (Hans) Arp, Anthony Barone, Federico Castellon, Paul Delvaux, James Meikle Guy, Maria Mesterou, Fernand Renard, Theodore J. Roszak, Jorge Noceda Sanchez, Ursula Schneider, Stella Snead, Pavel Tchelitchew, Vinciata and Zush/Evru, among others.
