[SHEEP HUNTING] McCLELLAN, HELEN LIVINGSTON. McClellan Mynderse and Allied Families.

[SHEEP HUNTING]
McCLELLAN, HELEN LIVINGSTON. McClellan Mynderse and Allied Families.
New York: American Historical Society, 1928. Includes A Hunting Log. An especially prepared edition (no explicit limitation but we suspect very few published), printed on Japan vellum, with the decorations hand-colored throughout. Full blue morocco with red morocco inlay, gilt tooled with armorial device to each cover and floral devices to inner covers, moire endpapers, the spine in six compartments separated by five raised bands, gilt lettered in two and tooled in the rest, all edges gilt, full red morocco doublures with onlays in red. 12 5/8 x 9 5/6 inches (32 x 24.5 cm); 151 pp., plates (the "Hunting Log" occuppies pp. 32-151) Neatly rebacked, light wear, but a sumptuous copy.
The history of the McClellan-Mynderse family, here issued alongside the posthumously published diary of Edwin McClellan, which details his hunts after bighorn sheep, mountain goat, caribou, moose, grizzly bear, etc., in the Cassiar Range of British Columbia. See Czech Bibliography of Hunting the Wild Sheep and Goats of the World p. 172 for the periodical appearance; this is a variant publication from the work principally described there, preceding it, though this is perhaps the undescribed form in "Full multicolor leather binding." Czech indicates the work as rare.

Provenance: The Collection of Arnold "Jake" Johnson

Sold for $2,646
Estimated at $800 - $1,200
