NEW YORK, NY – Doyle will hold an auction of Rare Books, Autographs & Maps on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 10am.The sale opens with two fossils, very far from our usual fare. Lots 3 – 74 are antiquarian books from a variety of consignors, including an interesting group of early books on science and a small selection of Aldines. Lots 75 – 93 comprise a collection of equestrian books, with a copy of Stubbs on the anatomy of the horse (lot 93) and some very scarce early Italian books on horsemanship. Lots 94 – 98 are a small group of manuscripts, including a Company School manuscript of Indian architectural views, an attractive 15th-century book of Hours, and a 13th-century manuscript psalter. Autograph material by Freud, Einstein, Napoleon and others is included in lots 99 – 116; literary autographs in lots 117 – 125; American autographs, including Cotton Mather, among lots 126 – 134; and American Presidents (including two fine Thomas Jefferson letters) are grouped in lots 135 – 148. This section is followed by printed Americana and memorabilia, lots 149–175, and maps (including the Chatelain map of the Americas), lots 176 –197. Travel and sporting books occupy lots 198 – 215, incorporating a small section of mountaineering, with a correspondence by the pioneering photographer of Alpinism, Vittorio Sella.

Literature begins with lot 216, continuing on to lot 327, with a small group of Virginia Woolf and Hogarth press material and a copy of the Limited Editions Club Ulysses, signed by Joyce and Matisse. A section of fine binding begins with two grand Cosway-style bindings (lots 328 and 329), and proceeds to lot 365. Lots 366 –376 is original illustration art, with art for five New Yorker covers, and two drawings for Charles Schulz Charlie Brown cartoons. This is followed by books on fine art and illustrated books, lots 377 –405. A section of private press books comprises lots 406 – 465, and the sale ends with a small section on space, lots 466–472.
