In his book Sargent's Boston (Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 1956, p. 101), David McKibbin mistakenly lists a drawing of Mr. Hay for 1919 but it is, in fact the present work. We thank Richard Ormond and Elizabeth Oustinoff for the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonne, for this clarification.
