This view almost certainly represents the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, with the Westerkerk in the background. The artist, who had lived in Amsterdam for some time, would have known the district well. Born into a family of artists, as a young man Willem Koekkoek studied architecture, an interest may have led to his specializing in paintings of town- and cityscapes such as this.
