A fine, large group of over one hundred mostly hand-colored prints extracted from Audubon, Curtis, Diderot and others. Comprising [CURTIS]. Approximately 50-60 loose hand-colored engraved plates from Curtis's Botanical Magazine; or, Flower Garden Displayed, circa 1800, most with text leaves attached, possibly from volume XV as that title page is present, 9 x 6 inches, disbound from text and with remnants of stitching to left edge, some with a pale stain, most fine; [GEORGE EDWARDS]. A hand-colored engraved plate by George Edwards The White Tailed Eagle from Hudson's Bay Published September 1741, 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches; [BUFFON]. About 20 hand-colored engraved plates of four-legged animals from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle; [TEXAS]. A hand-colored view after Arthur Schott Military Plaza - San Antonio, Texas, engraved by James Smillie, 9 x 11 1/2 inches, stains to edge; [JOHN JAMES AUDUBON]. About 32 hand-colored lithographs an octavo edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America including the Snowy Owl, lithographed by Bowen, 10 1/2 x 7 inches, some toned and with remnants of binding; [JOHN JAMES & JAMES WOODHOUSE AUDUBON]. Approximately 75 hand-colored lithographs from an octavo edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, including the White American Wolf, the Cougar, Wolverine, etc., 7 x 10 /2 inches, a few matted, most loose with remnants of binding, several with toning and stains; [GARDENS]. About seven large engraved 18th-century plates of garden designs, 15 x 10 inches; [DIDEROT]. Two copies of the same extracted section from Diderot's Encyclopedie titled Peches, Peches de Mar, Peches des Rivieres, each section with title leaf and 35 plates (total about 70), these sections disbound. A good group overall, sold as a collection of plates and not subject to return.

Esmond Bradley Martin
Esmond Bradley Martin (1941-2018) was educated as a geographer and philosopher. He and his wife Chryssee had an enduring fascination with Africa, and settled in Nairobi, Kenya, in the mid-1970s. He wrote extensively, oftentimes in conjunction with his wife, publishing works including Zanzibar. Tradition and Revolution, Hamish Hamilton, 1978; Cargoes of the east. The ports, trade, and culture of the Arabian Seas and western Indian Ocean, Elm Tree Press, 1978; and many other works on African history and conservation. In the late 1970s, he began extensive research into the illegal trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn, which included substantial stints incognito posing as a buyer of illicit wildlife products. For a while, he served as special envoy for rhino conservation for the United Nations.
For about thirty years, beginning in the mid-1960s, Esmond Bradley Martin assiduously collected books and manuscripts on Africa and its history, acquiring a phenomenal collection of letters by many of the major English explorers of the nineteenth century, as well as numerous rarities from earlier centuries. He was buying at a time when troves of such material surfaced frequently at English auctions. Doyle was privileged to offer the first selection from his collection in the November 7, 2023 auction. We are pleased to present this second offering of property from The Esmond Bradley Martin Collection.
