127

Two volumes bound for Simon St. Antonin, 1780s.

[FINE BINDING]

Two books finely bound for the same library in 18th-century France. On Heures Nouvelles dédiées a Madame la Princesse. Paris: Claude Herissant fils, 1753 and Nouvelles Etrennes Spirituelles dédiées à Monseigneur le Dauphin. Paris: Louis-Guill.[aume] de Hansy, 1770. Contemporary red full morocco gilt, green morocco onlays gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. The largest volume is 5 x 3 inches (13 x 7.5 cm); variously paginated. Extremities rubbed, some minor losses to the foot of the spine of the second work, though overall sound.

The overall design of both bindings is the same, and both were likely bound for the same owner. The sides bear large green stylized blossoms in inlay surrounded by four smaller green blossoms as cornerpieces, within borders of ferns or thistles and other tooling surrounded by plain and toothed fillets; spines with green onlays and lettering-pieces, compartments filled with various floral tooling. The latter binding is lettered on both sides: SIMON / ST. ANTONIN. St. Antonin is a town about 180 kilometers ESE of Bordeaux, and possibly also a surname.
