The Microcosm of London, an early issue
London in Miniature

[ACKERMANN PUBLICATIONS]

COMBE, WILLIAM et al. The Microcosm of London; or, London in Miniature. London: T. Bensley, [1808-1810]. The errata noted at the end of volume III in this set are uncorrected throughout the text. The contents leaf is in the first state. The key plates are a mixed bag, some first, some later. The plate watermarks are frequently early: these are primarily 1807 and 1808 in volume I. Three volumes, old brown russia, edges marbled; rebacked retaining the perished spines. 13 x 10 1/2 inches (33 x 27 cm); 104 finely hand-colored plates in mixed states, with accompanying text; with the half-titles, titles and dedication leaves. Recased as noted above, the bindings still quite worn; internally, toning and offsetting to the text, a few mostly marginal spots, the plates generally fairly clean, though with occasional marginal stains or foxing.
With 104 hand-colored aquatint plates, including fifty-four by J. Bluck, twenty-nine by J.C. Stadler, ten by T. Sutherland, ten by J. Hill, and one by Harraden, after Rowlandson and Pugin. The text of the third volume is by William Combe. This set has the plates very attractively colored, as is often the case with the earliest issue of this work. Abbey Scenery 212.
