The first English edition on Aegidius on tobacco

AEGIDIUS, EVERARD

Panacea; or the Universal Medicine, Being a Discovery of the Wonderfull Vertues of Tobacco Taken in a Pipe, with its operation and use both in physick and chyrurgery. London: Simon Miller, 1659. First English edition. 2 parts in one volume, old calf (rebacked). 5 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches (14 x 9 cm); [xvi], 79, [1] pp.; 55, [8] pp. ads, [1].; frontispiece of Aegidius smoking a pipe. Rebacked as noted, corners worn, slight discoloration and chipping to the frontispiece, the title toned by offset from the turn-ins, front endpaper lacking, internally a large clean copy. Bookplate of Samuel W. Lambert.

A panegyric on the medical virtues of tobacco, this was first published in Latin in 1587 in Antwerp. Included are instructions for growing the plant, preparing the leaves, various (somewhat dubious) ethnographic observations, and a great deal on tobacco as a cure for all ailments.
