HARVEY, WILLIAM
The Anatomical Exercises ... Concerning the Motion of the Heart and Blood. With the Preface of Zachariah Wood ... to Which is Added, Dr. James de Back, his Discourse of the Heart. London: Richard Lowndes and Matthew Gilliflower, 1673. Second English language edition, after the Latin edition of 1628. Plain modern crushed brown morocco, all edges red. 6 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches (17 x 10.5 cm); [24], 107, [21], 16, 13-172 pp. collating a4 (A-U)8 (U3, U4 misprinted T3, T4). The title-page a little toned and soiled, the gutter margin discreetly reinforced on the title and final leaves, several minor restorations to the lower corners of the first few leaves, a rather fresh example overall.
This is the second English language edition of Harvey's De motu cordis of 1628, in which he first put forward his observations and experiments demonstrating the circulation of the blood. The first English language edition was published in 1653, and this second edition is essentially the same textually. The translation, which was described by Keynes as "a vigorous, if unpolished, version... in contemporary language," is based on the Latin edition issued at Rotterdam in 1648. Also included in this work is a translation of James De Back's treatise on the blood. Wing H1084; Keynes 20; Wellcome III, p.219; Waller 4106.
