ONO, YOKO
Two framed leaves signed by Yoko Ono from artists' book/exhibition catalogue for The Stone exhibition held at Judson Gallery in Greenwich Village, March 1966. [New York]: [Judson Gallery], [1966]. Two mimeographed sheets printed on rectos only, 8½ x 11 inches (21½ x 28 cm). Neat staple holes along left margin from original binding; some toning from age. Signed in 1988 by Yoko Ono on each leaf: one inscribed "To Jeff & Juanita."
Two leaves from a publication made for a Fluxus-adjacent exhibiton and performance organized by Anthony Cox, Yoko Ono's husband from 1962-1969. Alongside "sound forms" by Michael Mason and a "film message" by Jeff Perkins, Ono contributed her "eye bags." The "eye bags" were large black cloth bags which attendees to The Stone were supposed to enter for the duration of their time in the gallery. The bags were constructed so that an inhabitant could see through the fabirc, but would not be visible from the outside. The two leaves offered here comprise the first printing of Yoko Ono's famous "Biography" poem and a page titled "On Circle Event." Circle Event reflects Ono's fascination, shared with many Fluxus artists, with bureaucracy. This piece of artwork-as-paperwork invites The Stone's attendees to fill, stamp, and mail a form regarding "circle experience."
