COBURN, ALVIN LANGDON (1882-1966)
St. Paul's from the River Thames, 1909. Small-format photogravure, probably a trial proof, of the image from the 1910 first edition of the book London, 2 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches (65 x 57 mm), on larger sheet, signed in pencil by Alvin Langdon Coburn (margin l.r.).
An unusual and possibly unrecorded small-format proof of this famous image, this image was first published in a larger size (191 x 171 mm) in the artist's 1909 opus London. A new edition appeared in 1914 in a smaller format with image sizes close to the present, but the plates in that work do not include the present illustration. Signed Coburn gravures in any size are distinctly uncommon.
