James Dean signed high school yearbook

[JAMES DEAN]

1949 Black and Gold Fairmount High School yearbook signed by James Dean. Original gold faux-leather embossed binding. 8 x 10¾ inches (20 x 27 cm). Unpaginated. Very good, with some scuffs to the binding and upper hinge just cracked. Some foxing; thumbsoiling as expected in a book signed by dozens of teenagers.

By all accounts, the teenage James Dean was a hardworking student and well-liked among his peers. He was already beginning to blossom as an actor, too. This copy is signed "Jim Dean" next to a mention of his traveling to Longmont, CO for the National Forensic League's national champtionship, where he placed sixth in Dramatic Declamation with a performance of Charles Dickens's "A Madman's Manuscript." Dean is also pictured separately in uniform as guard for the Fairmount Quakers basketball team and in costume as Frankenstein's monster in a performance which "grotesquely 'scared the wits' out of the audience." A touching view of the small Hoosier community that raised one of Hollywood's most iconic figures. Less than a decade later, six fellow Fairmount High School alumni would serve as pallbearers at James Dean's funeral.
