Excelsior Park Gold Travel Clock

Estate / Collection: Property from the Petschek Family

14 kt., mechanical, circular off-white dial with Arabic numerals, 2 subsidiary dials, dial signed Excelsior Park, ap. 103 dwts. gross. With fitted case.

By descent from Paul Petschek, one of the founding brothers of the Petschek coal and banking empire in Prague and Germany in the late 1920's and 1930's, prior to WWII. The Petschek family evacuated Europe in 1938 to relocate to England, and later the US, with only their small valuables and some artwork, after having established a firm in New York City to which to transfer their money. Their homes were subsequently taken over by the Nazis and have now become the residences to several countries' Ambassadors, including the United States'. Of note, Shirley Temple Black, who once was the American Ambassador to the United States, lived in one of their homes in Prague. A book was written by one of the Ambassadors about that same home entitled The Last Palace, which recounts the unusual residents of the home and the events surrounding Prague’s past, throughout WWll and beyond. This collection includes some of the items brought to the United States by Paul Petschek, most of which were purchased in Europe in the early 1900’s.

Sold for $4,160
Estimated at $2,000 - $3,000
