Emile Pierre Branchard

American, 1881-1938
View of a Farmhouse in a Landscape
Signed EMILE / BRANCHARD (ll)
Oil on canvas
36 x 24 inches (91.4 x 61 cm)

Emile Pierre Branchard was a self-taught American painter whose work is noted for its charm and familiarity. He was raised in New York’s Washington Square at his mother’s renowned boarding house, which brought him into lifelong proximity with artists and writers, though he himself worked for many years as a stevedore, truck driver, and policeman before illness compelled him to paint. Using leftover materials and drawing on memory and imagination, he created nudes, landscapes, and still lifes; Branchard first exhibited publicly in 1919, later showed at the Marie Harriman Gallery, and was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1938 exhibition Masters of Popular Painting.

Framed 41 x 29 inches
