Peale Family Paintings from the Estate of J. Ashley and Pamela Patterson Roach
American, 1791 - 1878
Portrait of Rubens Peale with Spectacles, Wearing a Blue Coat over a White Stock
Watercolor on ivory
2 3/4 x 2 1/4 inches
Provenance:
Believed to be gifted by the artist to Mr. and Mrs. Rubens Peale
By descent to daughter Mary Jane Peale (1827-1902)
Sister-in-law Rebecca Frisby Wilmer Peale (1838-1921)
Daughters Caroline Elise and Elisabeth "Elsie" Burd Peale (1875-1931)
Sister Caroline Elise Peale (1872-1943)
Sister Rebecca Burd Peale Patterson (1881-1952)
Granddaughter Pamela Shippen Patterson (Roach) (1943-2013)
Trust of Pamela Patterson Roach, 2013
Trust of Joseph Ashley Roach, 2024-present
Note: This work has been attributed to both Rembrandt and Raphaelle Peale by various Peale descendants, but it is most likely a work referred to in Mary Jane Peale's A List of Paintings that I Own from 1885. An entry on the list reads "an injured miniature of father by Mrs. Duncan (Miss Anna Claypoole Peale, 1791-1878)". The work was most likely painted before 1829. Rubens Peale (1784-1865) was the subject of multiple portraits by family members. His brothers Raphaelle and Rembrandt famously painted him as a boy and a young man. His daughter captured him as an old man. This miniature is one of two painted by his cousin, the talented professional miniaturist Anna Claypoole Peale, capturing Rubens in the prime of his life, reveling in his role as naturalist and museum administrator of the Peale Museums in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.
We would like to thank Elise Peale Patterson Gelpi for her kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
