[AMERICAN MILITIAS-VERMONT] LAMB, LARNED. The Militia's Guide...

Estate / Collection: The Property of a New England Family

[AMERICAN MILITIAS-VERMONT]
LAMB, LARNED. The Militia's Guide: Exhibiting a more Comprehensive Explanation than Before Published, of the Posts and Duties of the Several Officers on a Review, from a General to a Sergeant, designed for the Instruction of a Young and Undisciplined Militia.
Montpelier: Printed by Samuel Goss, 1807. First edition. Later but early three-quarters morocco over marbled boards. 7 x 4 1/4 inches (18 x 11 cm); 105, [3] pp., a few woodcut borders in the text. The title mounted and with loss to corners, spotting and dampstain throughout, ink ownership markings to a text leaf, other small losses touching some text, the boards rubbed with minor damage to the foot of the upper board, sold with all faults.

A rare Vermont-issued militia guide from the years just before the War of 1812; the ownership markings within attest this copy was bought by one Stephen G. Arnold at Smithfield in September 1812. The work is scarce with no copy in the auction record since 1980. [McCorison 932.]
