John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Gala program signed by almost all performers

[KENNEDY INAUGURATION - FRANK SINATRA; ELLA FITZGERALD; and OTHERS]

Inaugural Gala in Honor of the Inauguration of The Honorable John Fitzgerlad Kennedy ... Thursday, January 19, 1961 ... The Armory, Washington, D.C. Washington: 1961. Original printed wrappers with gold tassel, photographically illustrated within, 11 x 8 inches. On the cover is the ink signature of Art Sands who collected the autographs within on the night of the performance and stapled to the inside cover are Sands' Inaugural Ball and Gala tickets, this leaf also signed by the opera singer Helen Traubel. Within the program, the full-page black and white portraits of the performers are signed in either red or blue ink. The signers include in this order: Harry Belafonte, Milton Berle, Leonard Bernstein, Joey Bishop, Nat King Cole, Tony Curtis, Bette Davis, Jimmy Durante, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Alan King, Janet Leigh, Frederic March, Ethel Merman, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sidney Poitier, Keely Smith (who has inscribed to Artie) & Louis Prima, Juliet Prowse, Anthony Quinn, and Frank Sinatra. The wrappers creased and with a split along foot of spine, some toning and marks within, the tassel detached.

The Inaugural Gala honoring President-elect John F. Kennedy took place on the night before the inauguration and was organized by Peter Lawford and Frank Sinatra. A star-studded event, the night is remembered as one of the best and most glamorous parties ever held in Washington. The show was directed by Roger Edens who was assisted by Kay Thompson. The entertainers represented a cross-section of the best in entertainment such as Maestro Leonard Bernstein, Broadway legend Ethel Merman, comedians Milton Berle and Alan King, and others. Poignantly, as Kennedy was a defender of Civil Rights, the Star Spangled Banner was sung by Mahalia Jackson, and later Ella Fitzgerald performed as did Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier. Most notably though was the Rat Pack itself, which included performances by Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and none other than Frank Sinatra, then at the top of his fame. This is a rare assembly of autographs from this notable event and we trace no other.
