Charles Coleman Sellers, Rubens Peale: A Painter’s Decade, The ART Quarterly. Vol. 23, No. 2, Summer 1960.

Notes:
The Juniata River near the village of Mexico, Pennsylvania, held special significance for the artist as his wife's ancestral home and home to their growing family beginning in the 1830s. The painting is one of at least four copies, based wholly or in part, on this scene, captured by the German-born artist, Paul Weber (1823-1916). As part of his education as a painter, Rubens completed the first version in collaboration with Anna Sellers as part of a lesson in "touch and coloring" and given as a wedding present to his son Edward Burd Peale. This copy is the first completed entirely by Rubens himself and was presented as a gift to his son Dr. James Burd Peale in the year of his marriage to his first wife. Rubens gave or sold all but one of his copies to a family member, including this one. The diaries of Rubens Peale, 1855-1865, record that he built the frame for this piece.

We would like to thank Elise Peale Patterson Gelpi for her kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
