Rocca Di Papa, 1857
Inscribed as titled and dated May 8th /57 on an old label attached to the backing
Oil on paper mounted to board
8 x 15 inches
Provenance:
Alexander Gallery, New York

Beard is best known for his satiric genre scenes featuring animals who act out human roles. Bears were his main subject, as in The Bear Dance of ca. 1870 in the New York Historical Society. This landscape dates from the artist's 1856 to 1858 trip to Europe, where he met and painted alongside American artists in Düsseldorf, including Leutze, Sanford Gifford, Whittredge, and Bierstadt. That the artist visited Italy is revealed in this image looking toward Monte Cavo, the second highest mountain in the Alban Hills near Rome. Painted from a high vantage point, Beard's view is of Rocca di Papa on the slopes of Monte Cavo near Lake Albano, a subject also rendered by Turner in the early nineteenth century. The scenery, both dazzling and verdantly pastoral, is brought out by Beard in this image.
