Carol Lowrey. Hayley Lever (1876-1958), Exh. cat. New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2003, p. 89 color illus., cat. 33
Of this painting, Carol Lowrey wrote in Hayley Lever (2003): "After moving to Caldwell, New Jersey, about 1930, Lever painted in various parts of the state, drawing inspiration from its coastline and waterways and from the communities such as the township of Belleville, situated just to the north of Newark in Essex County. It was there that he produced this townscape featuring houses nestled comfortably around the Dutch Reformed Church at 171 Main Street, as seen across the placid waters of the Passaic River on a summer's day. Once known as the Second Reformed Church at Second River, the congregation was established around 1697-98 by Dutch settlers, making it the oldest congregation still functioning in New Jersey today. The stately edifice depicted in Lever's image was erected in 1863, a Gothic-revival building designed by the architect William Kirk. . . . His portrayal of the foreground is especially striking, his divisionist brushwork capturing the ebb and flow of the river as well as the reflections of glistening sunlight in its surface."
