To Kill a Mockingbird signed by Harper Lee, Gregory Peck, Mary Badham, and Phillip Alford

HARPER LEE

To Kill a Mockingbird. [New York:] HarperCollins, [1995]. The Thirty-Fifth Anniversary Edition, signed by the author Harper Lee in black ink on the title page, Gregory Peck in black ink on the quotation leaf, and inscribed by Mary Badham and Phillip Alford. Publisher's cloth, in the original dust jacket. 323 pp. The front hinge is loose, else fine.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a notoriously difficult title to collect signed or inscribed due to the reclusiveness of its author, Harper Lee. More willing to sign later in life, this 35th Anniversary Edition does appear signed or inscribed more frequently than the first, but this copy is greatly enhanced by the signature of the top stars of the beloved 1962 film adaptation. These include Gregory Peck, who played father and lawyer Atticus Finch, Mary Badham, who played Scout Finch, and Phillip Alford, who played Jem Finch. The volume is inscribed to the niece of Mary Badham, who adds the character name "Scout" below her inscription. Philip Alford has similarly added his character name. It was Badham who sought out the signatures of the author Harper Lee and co-star Gregory Peck, who was then over 80. Peck has appropriately signed under the quotation by Charles Lamb that precedes the novel: "Lawyers, I suppose, were children once." For her role as Scout, Mary Badham, at 10 years old, was the youngest actress ever nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actress. For To Kill a Mockingbird, Gregory Peck was awarded the Best Actor Oscar and the film garnered two others (on 8 nominations). Consistently highly ranked in any poll of American movies, the American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. We trace no copy of To Kill a Mockingbird signed by the novel's author and the three stars of this highly regarded film.
