A Girl with a Cat is attributed to Antonio Mercurio Amorosi (1660-1738), a painter of the late Baroque period who was active in Ascoli Piceno in the Marche Region of Italy and in Rome. Amorosi was part of the Bamboccianti school of painting, a group of artists who typically portrayed scenes of daily life in Papal Rome, often focusing on individuals at the fringes of society. Small works such as Girl with a Cat are characteristic of the light humor in Amorosi's art, as demonstrated in his other similar depictions of children such as an image of a "loving" boy holding a sheet with a caricature, belonging to the Holburne Museum of Art, Bath, England
