Anna Karénina ... in eight parts. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., [1886]. First American edition and the first edition in English, earliest state, without the ad leaf at the front and 5 pp. ads at the end (not listing any Russian title) following the glossary; final page blank; floral patterned endpapers, "13 Astor Place" on title, the sheets bulking to 35 mm . Publisher's sage green cloth stamped in gilt. 7 5/8 x 4 3/4 inches (19.25 x 12 cm); [2], viii, [5]-773 pp., [5, 1] pp. ads. Minor wear and soiling to extremities, offset from a pinned-in cutting on p viii and the opposing page, trace of a label mounted to the rear endpaper (no evidence that this was in a circulating library or similar). Name in ink dated June 1886 on first blank.
One of several cloth variants, all issued at the same time (blue, green, burgundy and brown noted). The first English edition was not published until the following year.
