This work was examined by the Remington Examination Committee on March 11 and 12, 2014 at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, Wyoming. "In the opinion of the committee, this item is an original work by Frederic Remington. The drawing, technique, composition, and theme conform with Remington's known works and his tecnical habits of 1890. This item is the original for the illustration from Thomas A. Janvier's story, "The Aztec Treasure-House" in Harper's Weekly (March 8, 1890), p. 177. When compared to the illustration, this item has been cut down on the right hand side."

The right edge is irregularly cut (perhaps from the artist). Pinholes and slight staining in the outer margin. Possible stain in the upper left quadrant to the left of the man sitting on the wall with the hat.
