Three Barbara Matera Costume Bibles for Promises, Promises, Little Foxes, and A Patriot for Me. Three black three-ring binders.

The book for Promises, Promises includes the original pencil costume sketches [likely by Donald Brooks] and fabric swatches on about 25 card leaves and mentions several character names as well as potential stars Blythe Danner and Bernadette Peters. The cover and some leaves detached; the book for A Patriot for Me contains about 50 thick leaves with mounted color photographs of the original costume designs and numerous fabric swatches; the book for The Little Foxes contains about 30 leaves of black and white copies of the original costume designs by Florence Koltz, including those for Elizabeth Taylor, with numerous fabric swatches. Toned, some leaves detached; Together with related Costume Bible materials, about one file box worth of files of original and copied costume bible materials such as sketches, measurements, fabric swatches, cut forms, etc., all for a variety of shows including Sunday in the Park with George; The entirety of the lot with wear from handling and use and sold as is.

The Estate of Alan Schneider
Featured in the sale was fascinating collection of early Waiting for Godot material from the Estate of Alan Schneider that topped $75,000 amid trans-Atlantic competition. “The primary American director of Samuel Beckett plays” and a close friend of the playwright, Alan Schneider died in 1984, and his widow died at 101 this past summer. This remarkable archive offered an extraordinary glimpse into the creative partnership between Schneider and Beckett, spanning decades of groundbreaking theatrical work. Highlights included Schneider’s annotated working copy of Waiting for Godot used in the landmark American production, an inscribed typescript of Eh Joe, and first editions and presentation copies of Endgame and Happy Days, many personally inscribed to Schneider by Beckett. Other treasures included manuscripts, letters, awards, recordings and posters that document a pivotal collaboration in modern theater history. Read more
