Two autographic items. Comprises an autograph letter signed to James H. Camten, Jr., from Cooperstown, September 26, 1835. 7 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches (19 x 20 cm); single-page. Framed with an engraved portrait of Cooper, the whole housed in a decorative gilt frame; together with a cancelled check signed dated December 7th, 1840, drawn on Otsego County Bank to H. Phinney in the amount of three hundred and fifteen dollars. Framed with an engraved portrait of Cooper, the whole housed in a decorative gilt frame.
The letter reads in part: "In compliance with your wish, acknowledge the receipt of your favor... I regret that my letter will be of so little value on every account, but, if it affords you any gratification, it will give me pleasure to write it. My acquaintance with Mr. Willis is very slight..... I do not remember ever having received a letter, or even a note from him, and consequently cannot comply with your request, as it respects that gentleman." The second item is a check to the Cooperstown publisher Henry Phinney.
