James Polk appoints an officer to Captain

POLK, JAMES and MARCY, WILLIAM L.

Document signed. Washington: 3 March, 1849. Engraved document on vellum accomplished in manuscript, with white wafer seal, docketing in red ink to upper margin, signed by Polk as President and countersigned by Marcy as Secretary of War. The document brevets First Lieutenant Henry M. Judah to the rank of Captain effective September 13, 1847 "for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle of Chapultepec, Mexico.' 19 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches (50 x 40.5 cm). Usual folds, a few very minor stains in margin, somewhat faded, laid down to card. Not examined out of frame.
