Number 89 from the limited edition of 1000 copies, additionally inscribed "To Berge Avadanian/HIRSCHFELD" in ink on the half-title. Publisher's white cloth with colored illustration on upper board, lacks slipcase. 18 x 14 inches (46 x 35 cm); 24 original lithographs, plus illustrations in text. The cloth with splits to spine, soiling and spotting, slightly bowed, the text toned, light foxing to mounts and plates throughout.
Al Hirschfeld's iconic depiction of 1930s Harlem, rare inscribed. Considered by many to be his finest work, the colorful street style and smoky jazz clubs of the Harlem Renaissance are famously captured in illustrations such as "Scufflin' In", "Lindy Hop", "Reefer Man" and "Stompin' at the Savoy".
