NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will hold an auction of English & Continental Silver on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 10am. The sale showcases fine examples of English, Irish, German, Dutch, French and Italian silver by prominent makers of the 18th through 20th centuries.

The Walpole Sterling Silver Gilt Seal Salver
Highlighting the sale is the Walpole Sterling Silver Gilt Seal Salver—a rediscovery of an important piece of 18th century English silver, long known only from an ink impression in the British Museum. Made by London silversmith William Lukin, circa 1717, the salver forms part of a select group of “seal silver,” traditionally given as a royal perquisite to Crown office holders. It was commissioned by Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745), considered England’s first Prime Minister and one of the most prodigious silver collectors of the 18th century. The salver was sold in the famed Strawberry Hill sale of 1842, from the collection of Horace Walpole, to the 13th Earl of Derby. It remained in the Derby collection until it was sold privately in the 1940s and now reemerges after many years in a New York private collection.

Additional Categories in the Sale
Special sections of the sale will also present Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints on May 13, and English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts on May 14.
