NEW YORK, NY – Doyle held a successful auction of Latin American Art on March 13, 2024. Comprising lots 51 – 119, the sale of paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints presented works by prominent artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, representing Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean Islands.
Hector Hyppolite – Sold for $203,700
Highlighting the sale was a rare and fantastic work by Haitian artist Hector Hyppolite (1894-1948) titled Fete du Morts that soared past its $80,000-120,000 estimate to achieve $203,700 – the second-highest auction record for the artist. A practicing Voodoo priest, Hyppolite created strange and surreal images, such as this painting depicting a priest attending to a funeral ceremony. The work was acquired by songwriter Irving Berlin and descended in the family.
Diego Rivera – Sold for $254,500
While on holiday in Mexico City in 1947, Irving Berlin visited the great Mexican muralist Diego Rivera in his studio and commissioned an original artwork for a sheet music release of his song, In Acapulco. The artwork was ultimately not used, and the painting remained in Berlin’s, and then his daughter’s collection. This specially commissioned-watercolor realized $254,500.
José Clemente Orozco – Sold for $191,000
On the same trip to Mexico City, Irving Berlin also visited another prominent muralist, José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), and purchased a painting that his daughter described as “…a bright and hectic fiesta scene (which turned out to be The Day of the Dead).” This colorful painting sold for $191,000.
Ricardo Martinez – Sold for $114,800
From the Collection of a Bel-Air Actress was a painting from 1977-78 by the Mexican artist Ricardo Martinez (1918-2009) titled Mujer con Vaso that sold for $114,800, surpassing its $60,000-90,000 estimate. The work was acquired directly from the artist by the consignor. The thirteenth of sixteen children, Ricardo Martinez and several of his siblings began studying and creating art early in their youth. By the 1940s, Martinez had begun a body of work that embraced both the Mexican Muralists as well as the Surrealists. Creating sublime, minimal surfaces, Martinez's works retain a magnificent simplicity, both monolithic and ethereal.
Newly Discovered Works by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and Hector Hyppolite
The auction featured several newly discovered works of art from the Estate of Mary Ellin Barrett, the eldest daughter of legendary songwriter Irving Berlin. Ms. Barrett accompanied her father on trips throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, and documented their travels in her 1994 book, Irving Berlin: A Daughter’s Memoir, published by Simon & Schuster.
