NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will hold an auction of Latin American Art on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 11am. The sale of paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints will present works by prominent artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, representing Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean Islands.
Alfredo Castañeda
From 1971, El Guardian de la Hoja showcases Alfredo Castañeda’s clever usage of collage, as well as his Surrealist influences. A lifelong admirer of René Magritte, Castañeda was later given the opportunity to represent Mexico in “The Spirit of Surrealism,” a landmark survey of Surrealist Art, including Magritte, Dali, Ernst and others, in Germany. Lot 591
Rodolfo Morales
One of Oaxaca’s most beloved Contemporary artists, Rodolfo Morales’ Magical Realist style encompasses influences from Surrealism, as well as indigenous Oaxacan art. From 1987, Ascension is a rare dream-like scene of an angel embracing a figure floating above a quiet street. Lot 607
Pablo O’Higgins
Working as an assistant to Diego Rivera, Pablo O’Higgins worked alongside Rivera on a number of murals, as well as illustrating political periodicals such as the Daily Worker. From 1936-37, Untitled (Mexican Scene) shows a man approaching a family seated on a walkway, which draws influence from Rivera’s social realist depictions of life in Mexico. Lot 556
Gunther Gerzso
Born in Mexico City, Gerzso was sent to Switzerland to live and study with his uncle, a noted art collector. Gerzso began a relationship with the Surrealists during that time, continuing with his return to Mexico City, where he was a peer of Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo and others. Among a large group of unique and editioned works offer in this sale, Torso III from 1960 shows Gerszo’ minimalist approach to abstract painting, as well as an illusory nod to Surrealism. Lot 576
20th Century Abstraction
A special section of the auction will present 20th Century Abstraction by American and European artists (Lots 501-555). Read More
