  • Auction of Photographs on December 12, 2023
  • Comprised Lots 3001 - 3129
  • Fine Photographic Images from the 19th Century to the Present Day, Photographic Literature and Vernacular Photography

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle presented an auction of Photographs on December 12, 2023 showcasing a wide range of fine examples spanning the history of the medium, from early photographs to the current day. The sale results exhibited the general resilience of the photography marketplace, with 19th and early 20th century work seeing concerted interest, as did 20th century and contemporary work, which has a more predictable following.

A fine example of the large-format edition of Stieglitz’s The Steerage, lot 3114, made $18,900; his very rare portrait of Kitty Stieglitz, lot 3115, made $5,355, far in excess of the estimate. Nick Brandt’s spectacular study of an elephant, lot 3035, achieved a healthy $17,640. A Brancusi study for his sculpture Leda achieved $16,380, lot 3036. Horst’s portrait of Coco Chanel, an iconic fashion photo, realized $4,095 as lot 3071.

Contemporary photography also exhibited strength, with lot 3105, a Serrano Crucifixion from the Bodily Fluids series reaching $10,170; a Cindy Sherman from the Tale Series (untitled #143) attained a strong $44,180 (lot 3108). Among classic 20th century work, a scarce Frederick Sommer from his cut paper works (lot 3113) made $11,340, and a lovely Edward Weston Eggplant, lot 3127, did $22,680. In short, a diverse and interesting group of photographic offerings achieved solid, strong prices.
