Doyle is pleased to present property from the collection of celebrated Washington, DC-based designer, businesswoman, and world traveler Anna Weatherley. Raised and formally trained in Hungary, Mrs. Weatherley is best known for her hand-painted porcelain designs rooted in the legacy of venerable studios like Herend and Zsolnay, which produced delicate, floral-patterned wares for the imperial court. Her inspiration has likewise been drawn from Dutch still-life paintings, as well as botanical illustrations from continental Europe and India. Her hand-painted porcelain designs have been commissioned for British royal residences in addition to The White House under several presidential administrations.
The Anna Weatherley Collection of Asian art and artifacts documents her lengthy residency and travels throughout Asia during the 1980s, when she was designing hand-embroidered and painted silk textiles. Traveling through India, Nepal, Tibet, Afghanistan, and beyond, Anna studied alongside local artists and craftsmen, collecting along the way artworks that represented the unique character and history of each region.
Among the offerings is a rare and substantial group of Bidriware from Karnataka State, India. Extended stays in the Himalayan regions of Tibet and Nepal led to the acquisition of exceptional and emblematic metalwares, created for both sacred and secular functions. Two fragmentary Buddhist heads from the ancient kingdom of Gandhara bear evidence of artistic influences drawn from classical Mediterranean civilizations.
