NEW YORK, NY -- The celebrated partnership between French designer Jean Schlumberger and Tiffany & Co. produced some of the most distinctive and captivating jewelry designs of the 20th century. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, Schlumberger transformed flowers, leaves, birds and other creatures into imaginative creations that continue to enchant collectors worldwide.
Born in 1907 into a prosperous textile manufacturing family in Alsace, France, Jean Schlumberger was immersed in color, pattern and design from an early age. Defying his family's expectations, he relocated to Paris in his twenties to pursue a career in the arts. There, he quickly gained recognition for creating whimsical costume jewelry and fantasy buttons for renowned Surrealist fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. After serving in World War II, Schlumberger moved to New York, where he established a boutique on East 63rd Street.
A pivotal moment came in 1956 when Tiffany & Co. Chairman Walter Hoving invited Schlumberger to join the legendary American jeweler. Given his own workshop and salon within Tiffany’s Fifth Avenue flagship and access to an extraordinary selection of gemstones, Schlumberger flourished. His inventive designs attracted an elite international clientele that included the Duchess of Windsor, Babe Paley, Bunny Mellon, Jayne Wrightsman, Gloria Vanderbilt, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy.
